@atomicpoet @Sbectol Not yet at least. And if we all do what we can to ensure the downsides of participating in such servers are widely known, hopefully they never will.
@Sbectol @atomicpoet We need to ensure the downsides of large centralised instances are common knowledge. Hopefully then large commercial instances fail to gain traction...
@Sbectol @atomicpoet Yep, same same Facebook. It will be difficult. It would prevent anyone on your instance from sharing and communicating with a large portion of the Fediverse. There's definite and immediate cons, and although worthwhile, the pros are long game and largely driven by idealism. Hopefully us nerds can make taking responsibility and owning your data cool, but I'm not holding my breath. As a rule, influencer's aren't known for taking responsibility...
@atomicpoet Is our best response simply discouraging its use and promoting alternatives? Or could we be more proactive? Maybe documenting and and blocking their spiders for instance?
@atomicpoet By running a large ActivityPub instance Meta can know about the people who use the instance, and also the people they follow. Building network maps will enable them to make educated guesses about what will eventually be a sizeable portion of the Fediverse. This is true of any large instance, but Meta will eventually be one of if not the largest. They will find a way to monetise that.
@raphael would be cool to see a hierarchy of parent companies too
@lordbowlich if it's any consolation I just wasted most of my day on an obscure Firefox browser caching issue... Sorry to hear about your keyboard. Hopefully it dries out OK.
Really enjoying this 2012 #NameYourPrice album: colours of melancholia by Colours Of Melancholia. Grab it here https://coloursofmelancholia.bandcamp.com/album/colours-of-melancholia
This was a great read. https://signal.org/blog/signal-is-for-everyone/
I've often scratched my head at Signal's decision-making. Stickers? Stories? I'd rarely use them, if ever. But Signal describes how they are specifically making features for users outside U.S. culture and infrastructural contexts.
@c_reider The words Elon and Musk are filtered on my account. I didn't even see your post until someone I follow replied and the lack of context made me curious
@GertyBz @atomicpoet I'd call it common parlance. I use and have heard it used in everyday conversation, and in reference to social media. I don't know how common the usage is tho.
I'm unsure if conversation controls will encourage broadcasting, but so long as it's not the default and its existence helps those who are being harassed, I encourage it.
(Tho I do wonder what kind of toots encourage these alleged "reply guys", I don't experience it. Perhaps because I try to avoid politics?)
@GertyBz @atomicpoet willing to speak, but not willing to listen.
@GertyBz @atomicpoet definitely. I did say I like the idea of lockable threads, it's just people on broadcast I'm less excited about. I wouldn't follow them anyway tho, so also not terribly worried.
Quite enjoying Lure Me by Eguana. A random find whilst looking for #NameYourPrice albums on #BandCamp
Hello Asia is the standout from my first listen through
@atomicpoet I do like the locked thread idea, but it won't stop anyone intent on harassing somebody else - they can just @mention them in response to a post if they're that determined. Surely outside of locked threads, pre-existing blocks and filters are sufficient? (Or, with all due respect, just posting somewhere else? Activity Pub is a _social_ networking protocol. If people would rather just broadcast, perhaps it's best to look at other mediums?)
