Yet another post saying "all browsers are Chrome, we must fight the patriarchy!" and I.... just... can't. It so misunderstands, well, software really that I don't know where to begin.

For what it's worth, I'm a big supporter of as many rendering engines as possible. I certainly don't want "Google to win". I'm just saying that a browser using Blink is NOT a Google zombie.

Follow

@scottjenson but your using a Blink based browser is still another nail in the coffin for Firefox and other alternatives. You're skewing the metrics of every site you visit, and making their supporting alternatives less of a priority.

@gr0k That is a fear, not something that we're currently seeing e.g. Safari is still the #1 browser on Mac OS... For what it's worth, I really hope more people use Firefox, it's GOOD to have other browsers and rendering engines out there.

And don't get me started on iOS which won't even LET Firefox ship natively. If you want to talk about skewing the market, save some of your ire for iOS...

@stooovie @scottjenson @gr0k

Just you wait, as soon as iOS supports 3rd-party browser engines, chrome will _increase_ in market share.

iOS is actually atm is the last actual stand against chrome dominance.

The #OpenWebAdvocacy group is shooting them selves in the foot

@scottjenson @gr0k Oh both, even all, are contemptible. However given our nature such grouchiness will persist through every time period and system.

The biggest issue is how much power is in one, ad revenue dirtied, hand. If one day they decide to push something unpalatable to chromium they will undoubtedly change the whole landscape. If chromium changes a hard to change api, all other browsers will mostly fall in line.

Also, safari. The joys of oligopoly.

@Madagascar_Sky @gr0k Yeah, I guess there are two points here: the overall shape the tech industry (which I think we're in agreement) and my frustrations with people equating using Blink to Google. They are very different things and I feel we should acknowledge that.

For example, I think EVERYONE on the web would love it if WebKit actually supported more web standards. The goal here is to get MORE redering engines not to create a monoculture. That's actually in Google's best interests

@scottjenson @gr0k
How do you think a monoculture is bad for Google's interests? Wouldn't they want to dominate the market to ensure their lifeblood ad revenue keeps flowing?

@Madagascar_Sky @gr0k absolutely a monoculture is bad. I'm not speaking for Google, this is just my personal opinion but a monoculture invites all sorts of regulatory scrutiny. The Chrome team in particular wants the web open and varied, that's why they work so hard on Web standards bodies.

"Monoculture" is what non-corporates THINK Google wants because it plays into their "they're all bastards" narrative.
