it's depressing that a large reason we have such a divide between the left and right is because both sides behave in a way where empathy is deserved, not foundational.
so many leftist posts berate & belittle people for liking a problematic thing, or doing something ignorant (bc they mistake it for malice) or whatever. they talk to strangers like an angry parent. it's, bad.
I spend a lot of time trying to undo this damage on an individual level.

being exploded at / bullied / belittled is something no one should have to go through. these people who would otherwise be on our side are exposed to that and distrust social justice and disengage. that's how bigots recruit them
you can't control other people, you can only guide them. and if you can't find it in you to be cognitively empathetic to a person, or a group of people, don't talk about them. this is universally applicable, no matter who you are.

@machinesbleedtoo I have been screamed at and physically assaulted for proposing things that are now recommended in NYTimes front page articles. I'll never engage with a self proclaimed leftist ever again (or anyone who comes across as one) and I'm an old hippie with strongly leftist values. The left are their own worst enemy, and are doing an incredible disservice to the very people they proclaim to be protecting. Thank you for helping correct course.

@gr0k they use the same toolkit the right uses against them but they're The Good Guys so it's ~fine~. when the right think they are the good guys too. that's the trap. unthinking moral highhorsing. building rhetoric around an *identity* as a victim (something the right does all the fkn time too), not around the position of being one. it's all ego. it sucks
