I've been thinking about why Mastodon might not have the reach of bird site, and particular difference came to mind.

On other sites, like counts were visible indicators of post popularity. Those numbers "told" us something was "important". And based on the numbers we believed it to be true.

Here, we will likely see something get excessively boosted, but won't have any quantifying numbers.

We don't want vanity metrics here, so we'll have to rely on "trending now" for that measurement.

@BobWilliams 100% - without the vanity numbers people have to make up their own mind about what matters. There is far less peer pressure involved in Mastodon/ActivityPub, and far more personal responsibility.

@gr0k It's intriguing, and also an adjustment in usability and expectation for new users. Seems mostly it's been a a relief once people get used to it.
